November 12, 2013 - DTI Group Signs Contract with Aurizon for 3G Video Safety Systems on Locomotives
DTI Group is pleased to announce the signing of a contract for video surveillance systems with Aurizon Australia for safety enhancements which are set to revolutionise operations during reversing maneuvers on long-haul locomotives.
Aurizon, formerly QR National, is a publicly listed rail freight company in Australia operating the country’s largest rail coal haulage business with over 900 locomotives and thousands of operational staff. Aurizon are extremely focused on the safety and wellbeing of their employees, and enhancing safety in the field when reversing a 2 kilometre long coal train is an important enhancement.
Working closely with Aurizon’s engineering team, DTI have designed an innovative technical solution based on their proven MDR-5L recording platform using its integral 3G–LTE transmission. The solution utilises GPS-based technology to link vision from the rear of the train to the driver with storage of all video on-board mirrored to a secure network cloud.
A coal freight train presents one of the toughest environments for any video system including extreme temperatures, high shock and vibration, humidity, coal dust and caustic substances. To meet Aurizon’s requirements, the system had to be both physically and operationally robust with a minimum of operator intervention. To enable the driver to respond rapidly to changes, the lowest possible latency between on track events and driver vision was a mandatory requirement – a task that is difficult to achieve over Australia’s outback cellular networks.
The future scope of works may also include additional on-board cameras for pantograph fault analysis/monitoring for preventive maintenance and forward-facing cameras for driver education. DTI's comprehensive back-end CCTV management system will provide Aurizon with a powerful tool to retrieve live and recorded video sources for both operations and safety. DTI’s rail specific back-office suite provides significant benefits through the easy management of equipment, video retrieval and video storage.
This project further expands on DTI's success in providing advanced surveillance solutions and services to unique and demanding environments.
Fred Erdbrink, Business Development Manager for DTI, said: “This is another world first solution in the field of transit video surveillance and reflects the close working relationship that we create with our clients and in achieving their desired outcome.”
